College Grads: Which Ones Earn the Most?

Dear Readers,
This article is discussing about the current situation in the US. Perhaps in our country it is a little bit different. Nevertheless, happy reading!

by Bridget Quigg, PayScale.com

Have you ever wondered if Stanford grads really do make the big bucks, or if a "party school" degree can still land you a high-paying job?
Online salary database PayScale.com put together a 2009 College Salary Report that highlights which college graduates make the highest and lowest salaries right out of college and how that changes 10 years post-graduation.
While it may be no surprise that social work came in as the least well-paid major overall in PayScale's report, you may not know that Dartmouth's grads fare better financially 10 years after college than Harvard's.
Whether you went to a small, liberal arts college or graduated from an Ivy League school, take a look at the list below to see if your alma mater made a top 10 earners list.

School Name / Starting Median Salary / Mid-Career Median Salary
1. Dartmouth College: $58,200 / $129,000
2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT): $71,100 / $126,000
3. Harvard University: $60,000 / $126,000
4. Harvey Mudd College: $71,000 / $125,000
5. Stanford University: $67,500 / $124,000
6. Princeton University: $65,000 / $124,000
7. Colgate University: $51,900 / $122,000
8. University of Notre Dame: $55,300 / $121,000
9. Yale University: $56,000 / $120,000
10. University of Pennsylvania: $60,400 / $118,000

Maybe you didn't get to attend one of these top schools, but there's another factor that may contribute to a higher paycheck: your major.
According to Al Lee, PayScale's director of quantitative analysis, "Even more than where you go to school, the degree you get is a bigger influencer of your pay for the vast majority of Americans." Lee says that an English major from Harvard may end up making six figures, but that person is an exception among English majors.
Which degrees bring home the most bacon? "Ones involving numbers," says Lee. Seven of the 10 highest-earning undergraduate degrees in the report are in engineering, with economics, physics, and computer science filling out the rest.

Undergraduate Degree / Starting Median Salary / Mid-Career Median Salary
1. Aerospace Engineering: $59,600 / $109,000
2. Chemical Engineering: $65,700 / $107,000
3. Computer Engineering: $61,700 / $105,000
4. Electrical Engineering: $60,200 / $102,000
5. Economics: $50,200 / $101,000
6. Physics: $51,100 / $98,800
7. Mechanical Engineering: $58,900 / $98,300
8. Computer Science: $56,400 / $97,400
9. Industrial Engineering: $57,100 / $95,000
10. Environmental Engineering: $53,400 / $94,500

What other interesting facts did PayScale discover?
• Philosophy majors earn more 10 years after college than business administration and nursing majors.
• Two of the 10 most popular jobs held by Harvard University grads are executive director of a nonprofit organization and high school teacher.
• Loma Linda University graduates have the highest median starting salaries at $71,400 per year. That's over $6,000 more per year than a Princeton grad.
• The top paid English majors are technical writers.
• The top paid political science majors are intelligence analysts.

Welcome Back to Trimester 3

Hi Guys & Gals,

The new trimester is back. I wish to welcome back all of you to our lovely campus. I guess most of you have received the exam results for last trimester. And I bet most of you are smiling with the good results that you received, and are looking forward for the final trimester to finish off your foundation program. Insya Allah, God Willing, most of you will enter the degree program in July 2010 to start a new battle with completely different battlefield. On the other hand, some of you may need to extend your stay in the foundation program for another semester or so. Whatever it is, everything is back to attitude. If you keep on with your positive attitude, I'm very sure that you will have a smooth sailing, through and through. And of course if you keep on with a lacklustre attitude, everything will be difficult and you may not achieve what you wanted. As such, you need to look at at the mirror and refresh yourself with new attitude.

Wishing all of you the best!

Fields Trip

Dear PHYF125 Students,

Through this semester, we will be deliberating on topics related to electric and magnetic phenomena in terms of the fields of electric charges and currents. Among others, we will discover that the force between two electric charges is due to the interaction between either one of the charges and the field of the other. It is therefore essential that all of us are equipped with a thorough understanding of the methematical methods required to deal with fields. The concept of field and the mathematics of vectors are essential for us to study Physics in great depth.

Mathematically speaking, a field is a function that describes a physical quantity at all points in space. In scalar fields, this physical quantity is completely specified by the magnitude for each point. Temperature and electric potential are examples of scalar quantities that can vary from one point to another in space. As for the vector fields, both the number or magnitude and the direction are required. Gravitational force and electric field are example of such vector quantities. Furthermore, the usual custom right-hand Cartesian coordinates system will be used from time to time.

Enjoy your Physics!

Dear PPC students.

I'm showing the statistics of your performance in the PHYF115 subject for last trimester. Congratulations to those who did well but to the rests, it is not the end of the world. There is still time to make ammend on the past mistakes and I wish everyone all the best. Have fun in Physics!

Nasri set for first Arsenal start of the season

France midfielder Samir Nasri could be set to return to first-team action for Arsenal when they take on Liverpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday night.

Nasri suffered a broken leg during pre-season training in July but made his comeback for the reserves last Tuesday. And, having been named among the substitutes for the 2-2 draw against West Ham United on Sunday, he is now in line to make his first appearance of the season.

Goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski could also make his first appearance of the season as he looks to fight for his place after recovering from a knee injury.

"It has been a frustrating time for me because of the injury but it's gone now and I need to look forward to the future," Fabianski said. "I want to get back into the team, fighting for my place really hard.

"I want to show my quality and, hopefully, win a trophy with Arsenal. I can think about this now that I am completely fit, which is the main thing. I want it to stay that way."

Philippe Senderos and Mikael Silvestre are expected to be involved alongside a number of youngsters such as Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Carlos Vela and Fran Merida.
